About George Beck
Born Oct. 25, 1910 in Newark, England, George Beck became a mechanical engineer apprentice after graduation. In 1931, he enlisted in the Royal Army Engineer Corp and served until 1937, before starting his civilian life at an engineering company in his hometown.
From 1937 until the end of World War II, George would juggle civilian and military life. He was sent to France and ended up being evacuated from Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo, and was affected by the “Blitzkrieg” when his factory in England was destroyed.
Following the war, he returned to his career as a mechanical engineer, and worked for various companies including Rolls Royce and International Combustion.
Following his retirement in 1973, George moved to Portland, Ore., to live with his sons, Douglas and Eric. He coached Eric’s soccer team, St. Patrick’s, until his death in 1977.
That St. Patrick’s team continues on today as Pierre’s, which features some of the same players George coached back in the 1970s.
